Hansa Studios – Simon East

The Hansa Tonstudio is a recording studio located in Berlin. It is perhaps best known as the studio where Bowie recorded Low and Heroes in 77 during his Berlin phase, but in the 80s was used to record many influential records, many by British bands. Rock Steady emerged from the vibrant Jamaican music scene in 1966 with Alton Ellis’ ‘Rock Steady’ (opening tonight’s set). Influenced by R&B, latin and African sounds Rock Steady slowed down Ska’s frenetic beat introducing the ‘one-drop’ off-beat drum pattern.

Carsten Nicolai – Simon East

Carsten Nicolai is a German musician who releases recordings mostly under the name Alva Noto. He is known as one of the pioneers of glitch electronic music. As well as his own recordings he often collaborates with other musicians including: Ryoji Ikeda, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Bryce Dessner.
