Daisy Age Hip Hop – Simon East

Daisy Age Hip Hop is a music genre that arrived in the late 80’s and early 90s. The bands associated with it were focussed on peace and harmony, a total contrast to the Gangsta Rap that was emerging at the same time. It is named after De La Soul’s D.A.I.S.Y. concept acronym “da inner sound, y’all” for their first album: 3 Feet High and Rising. As well as De La, this genre included bands like A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets.

Me Myself And I – De La Soul

Check the Rhime – A Tribe Called Quest
Sum Of Us – Jurassic 5

Jazz Rock 1971 – Michael Goodliffe

It’s 1971. Sadly, the Beatles were finished. Many musicians felt three chord pop to be too confining and wanted, and were good enough as musicians, to fuse elements of pop, jazz, rock and blues into what became known as progressive rock. Tonton Macoute, in their only album, were one such band. The Mahavishu Orchestra, fronted by English guitarist John McLaughlin, lasted much longer…

A Lotus on Irish Streams – Mahavishnu Orchestra
Don’t Make Me Cry – Tonton Macoute
Natural High Part 1 – Tonton Macoute
Natural High Part 2 – Tonton Macoute
You Know, You Know – Mahavishnu Orchestra

Sitar – Duncan Cooper

The sitar was developed during the 16th and 17th centuries in India, arriving at its current 20 string form sometime in the 18th century. This 30 minute collection traces the recent history of Sitar recordings. From the improvisational Ragas made famous by Ravi Shankar in the 1960s, to the hippy embraced Raga rock movement, spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and more recent infusions into dance music. The music demonstrates the versatility of the Sitar (and its sister instrument the Tanpura) as a lead or backing instrument, or simply to provide a textured drone while other melodies take form.

Chandra (The Moon) – Michael Mandrell and Benjy Wertheimer
Journey In Satchidananda – Alice Coltrane & Pharoah Sanders
Gat II (Tala: Ek-Tal) [Raga Jogeshwari] – Traditional, Ravi Shankar, Alla Rakha, Ms. Jiban, Ms. Widya

Back in Perfect Harmony – Salmon & Croot

After a 17 year hiatus, “Kings of Variety” Salmon & Croot, return to the stage, in this, the first show of their 96 date warm up tour.

Trip Hop – Duncan Cooper

It’s difficult to put your finger on what Trip Hop actually is. As ever the term was coined by a journalist (circa 1994), and loosely describes an electronic and slow pulsed take on hip hop, often with a few psychedelic elements thrown in for good measure. In the UK we tend to think of the holy trinity of the Bristol Scene – Tricky, Portishead and Massive Attack – who were all at their peak in the early to mid 90s. These bands along with some Japanese and US takes on the Trip Hop vibe are featured tonight.

Heavy Loaded Head – Various Artists
I Could Just Die – Earthling
Roads – Portishead
Hell Is Round The Corner – Tricky
In / Flux – DJ Shadow
Protection – Massive Attack ft. Tracey Thorn
Karmacoma – Massive Attack

UK R&B – Tom Beesley

Contemporary R&B is a term used to describe a particular genre of black urban music drawing on soul, hip hop, pop and electronic dance music. Many view the music of Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson as the originators in this field. This selection brings together some of the current UK exponents of the style.

Offence – Little Simz
Water (If Only They Knew) – Kojey Radical ft. Mahalia
Got Me Thinkin’ – The Mouse Outfit feat. Sparkz
Shade – IAMDDB
On My Mind – Jorja Smith

Astral Jazz – Tom Beesley

Astral/Cosmic/Spiritual Jazz emerged in the late sixties, as various musicians who had played with John Coltrane took his ideas and pushed them into new territory. This selection brings together the sounds of Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, Lonnie Liston Smith and Alice Coltrane.

Degi-Degi – Don Cherry
Expansions – Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes
Blue Nile – Alice Coltrane
The Creator Has A Master Plan – Pharoah Sanders

Female Voice – Linda Green

I have chosen ‘Female Voice’ as it gives me an opportunity to play and share tracks by powerful singers whose music I really enjoy and listen to a lot. Ranging from the 1980s to the present day and from Joan Armatrading to The Unthanks, these sounds bring back fond memories from the last thirty years and create a great kitchen karaoke.

Rolling In The Deep – Adele
Back To Black – Amy Winehouse
Put Your Records On – Corinne Bailey Rae
Moonshine Freeze – This Is The Kit
Horizon – Aldous Harding
Love And Affection – Joan Armatrading
Magpie – The Unthanks
Strong – London Grammar

Ornithaudiology – Helen Steward

The sounds of birds are some of the most evocative in the natural world. Birdsong is often what we most notice and pay attention to, but in fact it represents only a small fraction of the world of bird sound – which encompasses contact calls; alarm calls; various forms of drumming (woodpeckers, snipe); wing-clapping (wood pigeons); booming (bitterns); whistling (wigeon and many other ducks); squealing (water rail); and more. I’ve tried to include a wide range of these auditory phenomena in this set. All the birds sampled can be heard in the British Isles (at the right time of year); and many can be found in Ilkley!

Film & Music Play: Orchestrations of joyful doing – Clare Dearnaley

Music either leads or compliments my films, I’ve chosen tracks for mood, lyrical content, propaganda, to give you room to think or simply to make you smile.
Audio tracks include: Public Service Broadcasting, The Clash, Nightmares on Wax, Who da Funk, Jenny Scheinman, Julie Byrne and a live recording of a young local band called Altum.
Visuals are from recent film shoots, as a series of little loose vignettes. Art workshops, dancers and 15 and 16 year old musicians to give a few examples. I’ve been focusing on children and young adults caught in their joy and absorption of performing creative acts. This is mostly research footage, I hope it will go on to help me make a longer film – fingers crossed!

Progress – Public Service Broadcasting
A Ride With Polly Jean – Jenny Scheinman
Beating – Altum
Lost in the Supermarket – The Clash
Shiny Disco Balls – Who Da Funk
You Wish – Nightmares on Wax
Natural Blue – Julie Byrne
Best Team (Joshua James Remix) – Rozi Plain
Imagination – Brayd3n

John Lydon – Tim Davis

John Lydon’s singing has been described by Captain Sensible as ‘old man Steptoe moaning’ and by Jah Wobble as ‘a mixture of Withnail and Kenneth Williams’. But from the Sex Pistols to Public Image he has always been angry.

Billie Holiday – Susie White

Billie Holiday was a jazz vocalist born in 1915 in Philidelphia. Her first influence on her singing came when she used to run errands for the girls in a near-by brothel in return for listening to jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong. She originally went to audition at a club to dance but didn’t get through but then was asked if she sang, and that was her break. In 1938 she appeared at Cafe Society in New York and introduced one of her best-known songs, Strange Fruit, a poem written to music by Abel Meerpool as a protest song.

Terrible Angels: The music of CocoRosie – Phil Hardy

“US freak-folk and fractured dream-pop band based around the half-Cherokee sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady. During the last decade, the duo have crafted precious music that frequently spirals off into pretentiousness, yet boasts a fierce beauty at its cluttered core.”

Japanese Innovation – Gary Winters

With strong routes in the western post-war avant-garde explorations of minimalism and drone this is a sampler of essential underground Japanese recording artists from the last 50 years. Concentrating primarily on electronic and noise (Japanoise), of course this is not a complete survey of ground-breaking sonic experimentation, but just one blossom on a very large cherry tree. “If by noise you mean uncomfortable sound, then pop music is noise to me.” – Merzbow

In 1952 Folkways issued Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music, comprising of recordings issued between 1927 and 1932. The 84-track anthology is recognised as a seminal inspiration for the folk music revival of the 1950s/60s. Smith spent his final years as ‘shaman in residence’ at Naropa Institute. Rodriguez – Emily Muirhead

I first fell in love with the music of Sixto Rodriguez in the 1990s. I was told that he had shot himself on stage in the 1960s, after his first album had bombed in the USA. Then in 2012 I watched a film called Searching for Sugarman which documented the search for Rodriguez. He had become the sound of the Apartheid in the 1990s and a South African cultural phenomenon, but like me, they all thought he had committed suicide. His music is unique and timeless and I am so happy this amazingly modest and talented musician is now enjoying the recognition that he deserves.

French Synth Pop – Joe Johnson

The celebrity soundbites of a typical ‘I remember the 90s’ TV show would probably suggest that the latter part of the decade was all about Radiohead’s melancholic rock and the UK’s post-Britpop hangover, yet across the channel the mood was notably celebratory. The blueprint of French house, or ‘French Touch’ as it is also known, can be found in the disco bass lines and filtered samples of Daft Punk’s early singles, such as Around the World. However not all French electronica from this period was aimed at the dance floor; the atmospheric, jazz influenced sounds of St Germain and Sebastien Tellier, combined with Air’s downbeat acoustic ballads, certainly prove that the genre wasn’t as mindless or repetitive as one might recall.

Northern Soul – Georgie Richmond

Starting in the early 70’s, Northern Soul was a scene that thrived on the rare and the obscure. After Motown’s success, small start-ups across America attempted to replicate the sound, on a budget, often making one off records by artists who never recorded again. This provided a rich seam of rare vinyl waiting to be discovered by die hard soul lovers in Northern England.

Keith Jarrett – Shaun Hutchinson

This set is 8 tracks from Keith Jarrett’s 1985 ‘Spirits’ album. He made this album alone in his home studio playing all instruments: vocals, guitar, glockenspiel, soprano saxophone, recorder, piano, tabla, flutes and percussion. This is Jarrett’s most personal album of boundless expression, moods range from jubilation to a burrowing pensiveness, but always with an ear attuned to catharsis! I met him after a gig at the Royal Festival hall in the 90’s and asked him to sign ‘Spirits’ but he refused saying ‘I don’t think I can sign that’ and walked off, as he felt (like Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring), he was merely a vessel the music passed through.

Spoken Word – Jeremy Lewis

From the words of the beat generation scene, to the word on the street (and much in between), the Spoken Word has always been flowing alongside the mainstream. Taunting, tempting, twisting genres. Double entendres. Jazz collaboration. Syncopation. Hip Hop (Don’t Stop!) Chumbawamba – Jeremy Lewis

There will come a time (perhaps it is already upon us), when people will remember only three things about the Chumbas – Their Greatest Hit (there’s only one!), attacking John Prescott at the Brits, and the foul-mouthed, whisky-swigging, high-kicking nun (now to be found mostly on the BBC) who smoked cigarettes and plied the front row of audiences with spirits. How times change. Lest we forget, revisit the best of 30 years of anti-Thatcher, anti-Establishment, anti-Fascist fun. From anarcho-punk, through post-rave experimental synth-pop, to its latter-day incarnation as a touring band of agit-pop folk troubadours, this was Chumbawamba.

In a reference to Tom’s geodesic dome structures the visuals are a film about Buckminster Fuller’s Union Tank Car Dome. The music is a selection of tracks by English electronic duo Plaid (they also record as The Black Dog). The organic sound of the music and their avoidance of standard dance music time signatures struck me as a good pairing with Fuller’s domes and Tom’s sculpture.

Gary Winters

“Modernity is the transient, the fleeting, the contingent; it is one half of art, the other being the eternal and the immovable.” – Charles Baudelaire. I have chosen a suite of pieces ranging across the period broadly categorised in terms of modernity. These works were a radical challenge to the past; maybe they still are, even if there are indicators of a more palatable, known, popular culture.

The visuals to this set were several videos by Sam Taylor Wood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXPP8eUlEtk&t=14s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyUWJqExw00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H21ypJb7KJk

My selections are played alongside the homemade films of people breaking into and exploring abandoned buildings. These explorers are drawn to these spaces, capturing them as they are precariously positioned on the edge of failure. The selected sound artists use the process of tape loops with Basinski repeatedly running tape over the head, and allowing it to deteriorate, leading to a beautiful collapse.

The visuals to this set were videos of abandoned buildings taken by John.
