Afrobeat – Tom Beesley

Afrobeat draws on West African musical genre’s including Highlife and US soul music by the likes of James Brown. Widely attributed to band-leader Fela Kuti and drummer Tony Allen the music developed in Lagos, Nigeria in the 1970s and was centred around Fela’s nightclub called the Afrika Shrine.

Tom Waits – Simon East

Waits has built up a distinctive musical persona with his trademark growl. Waits’ lyrics frequently present atmospheric portraits of grotesque, often seedy characters and places. He has incorporated blues, jazz, and vaudeville into his songs. Lately he has moved in more experimental directions.

Riot Grrrl – Georgina Richmond

Underground punk movement, Riot Grrrl, originated in the early 90’s. As part of the third wave feminist movement it often addressed issues such as rape, domestic abuse, patriarchy, sexuality and female empowerment. It showed girls as a “revolutionary soul force” with the power to change the status quo.

Pauline Oliveros – Tom Beesley

Born in the U.S. in 1932, Oliveros is a key figure in the development of post-war experimental and electronic music. Most famous for initiating the concept of ‘deep listening’ – an idea perfectly at home at All Ears.

David Sylvian – Simon East

David Sylvian came to prominence in the late 70s as the lead vocalist and songwriter in the group Japan. For a while their record company promoted Sylvian as “the most beautiful man in pop.” Japan broke up in 1982, since when Sylvian has produced many recordings, collaborating with a large number of different musicians including Robert Fripp, members of CAN and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Born David Batt, as a fan of the New York Dolls, he adopted his stage name from Sylvain Sylvain.

Written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, Super Fly was the soundtrack to the Blaxploitation film of the same title from 1972. Widely regarded as a classic of 70s funk and soul, Super Fly dealt with themes of drug use and deprivation with a social awareness – and made a great deal more money than the accompanying film.

Progressive House – Simon East

Progressive house emerged in the UK after the first wave of US house music. It’s roots can be traced back to the early 1990s UK rave and club scenes. In 1992, Mixmag described it at the time as a “new breed of hard but tuneful, banging but thoughtful, uplifting and trancey British house.” The Guerilla Record Label was pivotal in defining the sound with acts like Spooky and DOP.

Stereolab – Simon East

Stereolab are an English-French band formed by Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier in 1990 in London. They were a couple at the time but separated in 2004. Their sound is heavily influenced by 70’s Krautrock and 60’s Lounge. They have also been influenced by the Marxist and Situationist movements. They have released almost all their music on their own Duophonic Records label allowing them total control over their output. The band has been on indefinite hiatus since 2009.

Godspeed – Simon East

Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a Canadian experimental music collective which originated in Montreal in 1994. Their expansive sound ranges from post-rock to drone to ambient. The group have long been associated with the anarchist movement. A number of side projects have grown out of the original group, some of which we will play tonight, including Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band, Fly Pan Am, HṚṢṬA, Esmerine, and Set Fire to Flames.

Ryan not Bryan – Steve Parker

David Ryan Adams is an American singer-songwriter, musician and producer. He is best known for his prolific solo career, during which he has released fifteen albums.  He was born in 1974 in Jacksonville, North Carolina USA and was a member of alternative country band Whiskeytown with whom he released three albums before going solo.

At a concert in 2002, someone in the audience jokingly yelled out a request for “Summer of ’69,” a hit by the similarly-named Bryan Adams which he did not take well. In 2015, Ryan, who had since become friends with Bryan, played “Summer of ’69” at the end of a performance at the same venue.

Roots Reggae – Tom Beesley

By the end of the 60s Jamaican music was taking a more spiritual turn, combining Rock Steady, Blues, Gospel and Nyabinghi drumming with tenets from the Rastafarian religion. The new music spoke to the ghetto sufferer and the rural poor – addressing issues of oppression, black pride and a return to Africa – during a period of turbulent social change.

Sarah Records – Steve Parker

Sarah Records was a UK independent record label active in Bristol between 1987 and 1995. It is best known for its recordings of indie pop, mostly released on 7″ singles. It’s rare releases now command large sums.  The final track tonight is from a rare 12″ single by The Field Mice that is a very different sound from the jangly guitar pop they and many other Sarah Records acts tended to favour.

Noto & Sakamoto – Tom Beesley

This set features a film of a performance from 2016 by Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto that takes place in the iconic Glass House in Connecticut, designed by the architect Philip Johnson in1949. The artist’s sample sounds generated from the architecture and also incorporate sounds from the weather outside.

PAN is a record label based in Berlin and run by Bill Kouligas. Their releases mainly focus on experimental electronic and dance music. They have released tracks from established artists like Rashad Becker, Trevor Wishart and Florian Hecker, and supported emerging talents such as M.E.S.H., Helm and Objekt.

Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of Bali and Java in Indonesia. Using mainly percussive instruments, the music for religious and formal ceremonies dates back nearly 1000 years. There are a range of tracks tonight from different traditions both old and new.

Sound As Art – Gary Winters

Bristol Sound – Tom Beesley

The Wild Bunch were a dancehall sound-system established in Bristol in the mid 80s by Nellee Hooper (who went on to form Soul || Soul with Jazzy B) and Robert Del Naja (who went on to form Massive Attack). Vocalists Tricky and Horace Andy, producers Smith & Mighty and sound engineer Geoff Barrow (Portishead) were all connected to the sound-system.

Hendrix Anniversary – Duncan Cooper

Jimi Hendrix’ rise from session guitarist to the world’s hottest festival act took a mere 12 months. Pure showmanship and a string of distortion fuelled classics guarantee his rock immortality to this day. His musical evolution over 4 years as a solo artist contributed greatly to the 60’s psychedelic movement. Sunday was the 50th anniversary of Jimi playing in Ilkley, on March 12th 1967, at the Troutbeck Hotel.

Following five years working as a sound engineer for Basic Channel, Stefan Betke established and ran ~Scape records in Berlin between 1999 and 2010. Betke also recorded tracks under the name Pole and built the label into a pioneer of ‘glitch and click’ electronica.

Desert Blues – Duncan Cooper

Desert blues is a musical tradition emanating from the Western Sahara. In the 90s Ali Farka Toure brought the distinctive guitar style out of the dunes and to international attention. The civil war that followed in Mali meant that tapes of new bands were passed furtively around at Tuarag rebel camps. From this a new groove emerged, mimicking the sway of the camel and popularised by the likes of Tinariwen and Terakaft.

Matthew Herbert – Simon East

Matthew Herbert is a British electronic musician. He releases music under a large number of aliases: Herbert, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, Mr. Vertigo, Transformer, Wishmountain, and his Big Band. He often samples sounds from everyday items and then loops these to produce tracks. When playing live he will build entire tracks up from scratch based on samples.

The Hansa Tonstudio is a recording studio located in Berlin. It is perhaps best known as the studio where Bowie recorded Low and Heroes in 77 during his Berlin phase, but in the 80s was used to record many influential records, many by British bands.
